Tigerrrrrs!
Today I did one of my favorite topics for storytime (besides food and eating): Tigers!
Books: Close your eyes by Kate Banks
Tiger on a tree by Anushka Ravishankar
Have used in the past:
Sam and the tigers by Julius Lester because I just love those tigers running around the tree and turning into butter for pancakes!
Flannelboard:
Five little tigers:
Five little tigers walking by the shore
One went swimming and then there were four.
Four little tigers running 'round a tree
One turned to butter and then there were three.
Three little tigers visited the zoo
One fell in a cage and then there were two.
Two little tigers lying in the sun
One got too hot and then there was one.
One little tiger, sad and all alone,
Hopped a ship to India and so sailed home. (Because I stress that tigers are Asian, not African.)
Let's play in the jungle while the tiger is away.
Mr. Tiger, is it safe to play?
"I am putting on my first stripe." second stripe, third stripe, fourth stripe, last stripe (and the big tiger puppet comes out and jumps at them and everyone leans back and squeals).
Fingerplays:
This little tiger is very wild (thumb)
This little tiger is a loving child.
This little tiger has big black spots.
This little tiger has small black dots.
This little tiger likes to prowl and smell
But his teeth are too small to bite very well.

Going on a tiger hunt (very much like going on a bear hunt using appropriate gestures):
Going on a tiger hunt,
Gonna catch a big one.
I'm not afraid.
Oh look!
There's some ooey, gushy mud.
Let's go through it.
Shhhhlup, shlup, shlup, shlup.
Going on a tiger hunt,
Gonna catch a big one.
I'm not afraid.
Oh look!
There's some tall grass.
Let's go through.
Swish, swish, swish, swish.
Going on a tiger hunt,
Gonna catch a big one.
I'm not afraid.
Oh look!
There's a river.
No bridge!
Let's swim across.
Splash, splash, splash, splash.
Going on a tiger hunt,
Gonna catch a big one.
I'm not afraid.
Oh look!
There's a big tree.
Let's climb up and look.
Ummph, ummph, ummph, ummph.
I see a cave!
Let's climb down and look.
Going on a tiger hunt,

We're in the cave.
Big cave.
Darrrk cave.
Feel over here - nothing.
Feel over there - nothing.

Something warm.
Something furry.
